A Day in the Life of Crime Thriller Author Jennifer Chase @jchasenovelist #flowersonhergrave #writing #author #adayinthelife

A Day in the Life is Literarily Speaking’s newest feature. Here we get a glimpse into our favorite author’s day-to-day life! Today’s guest is Jennifer Chase, author of the crime thriller, FLOWERS ON HER GRAVE.

I write in one hour or two hour increments during the day and evening. This allows me to be able to complete other things such as household chores, promotion, exercise, and errands. One of my favorite things is when I begin one of my new thriller projects, I love creating my bad guys or characters you love to hate. I work it out by Big Three: Physical, Background, and Psychological.

When I outline the bad guys for my novels, it often reads like a police rap sheet and a psychological profile. I cannot overstate the effectiveness for research and outlining in fiction writing. There are those little pieces of nuggets that you can weave into the story that gives it the added realism and authenticity. These nuggets are like pieces of gold for me, and I love hunting for them.

Research into creating new characters works well for me because I love learning new things that I didn’t know yesterday, but it can be a daunting task if you don’t enjoy the process. I’ve managed to streamline my process a bit, so that I don’t get overwhelmed with too much information and avoid a major time void sucking the life out of me.

I remember when I first began writing screenplays, it was quoted many times in books and from successful writers that you must love all of your characters—even the bad ones. I embrace that simple task with every book project.

PHYSICAL
This is where I create the actual physical qualities of the character, what he/she looks like, mannerisms, specific characteristics, how he/she dresses, and even habits. I begin to get a real picture in my mind how this person looks, walks, and talks. It’s a writer’s character rap sheet with an added dimension of creativity.

BACKGROUND
Now it’s getting to be fun. This is where I begin to develop who they are with a history, life experiences, family, work environment, criminal activity, relationships, living conditions, education, and anything that wasn’t addressed in the physical area.

PSYCHOLOGICAL
Now, I have an actual image of the character and some background information.  It’s endless in creating the mind of a bad guy, and you can have so much fun with this area of writing. This is no doubt my favorite step to creating a bad guy. I like to have these characters answer a few questions for me, like what they would do if confronted with certain situations. This also includes their internal and well as external conflicts. Many of my bad guys are serial killers, so they are skewed with distorted perceptions, beliefs, and lack of impulse control. How fun is that?

A Day in the Life of Romantic Suspense Author Eva Mackenzie @evamackenzie #buriedinmypast #writing #author #adayinthelife

A Day in the Life is Literarily Speaking’s newest feature. Here we get a glimpse into our favorite author’s day-to-day life! Today’s guest is Eva Mackenzie, author of the domestic romantic suspense novel, Buried In My Past.

My good morning usually starts at five am. First things first, java, and lots of it. I love my morning coffee. I usually begin my writing day with anything creative; drafting, rewriting, or creative marketing things. I am currently editing a phycological thriller that’s set to release in August and drafting a suspense that will publish in early 2021. My brain works better with ideas in the morning than in the evening when my mind wanders. When my kiddos wake, I take care of all things kids until nap time…Thank goodness for nap time. This is when I usually do edits or marketing projects. I use a Kanban board that helps me keep up with all the different things I have going on.

In addition to Buried in My Past, I am working on two more book; one in the drafting stage and another going to my editor. I like to keep my work in progress rotating though the different writing stages to give my creativity (drafting) or my logical (editing) brain a rest. I love switching back and forth.

Fast forward to bedtime for kids. I work on anything I haven’t finished that has a deadline approaching. Sometimes I get to bed early, but not usually. And I love to end the day reading a book.

I enjoy it all. There isn’t anything I will avoid for too long, although I don’t like taking care of technical stuff that much. I usually beg help from my husband because he is much better with tech than I am.
It may seem hectic, but there is nothing I would rather do. It’s a ton of work, but when I read my book for the last time (which is usually the tenth time I’ve read it), I think to myself ‘I just did that’.

About the Author

Eva Mackenzie is an author who enjoys twisty, emotionally engrossing tales. Her debut novel has been a work in progress for over a decade. Under the urging of a loved one, it’s finally finished.
She is a wife and mother living on the east coast. When she isn’t writing, she is spending time with her family, training for her next marathon or reading stacks of suspense novels. Some of her favorite authors are Minka Kent, Dean Koontz, Tami Hoag, and Lisa Jackson.
Her latest book is BURIED IN MY PAST.

A Day in the Life of Mystery/Comedy Author David Schaub @moviemethods #writing #author #adayinthelife

A Day in the Life is Literarily Speaking’s newest feature. Here we get a glimpse into our favorite author’s day-to-day life! Today’s guest is David Schaub, co-author of the adventure/mystery/comedy novel, Spirits of the Western Wild.

While much of my life revolves around writing in one form or another, I’m not able to commit myself to it full time, just yet.  My primary gig is that of an animator and animation supervisor in the movie business, which I’ve been doing for more than two decades now.  In general it’s a consuming lifestyle that leaves very little room for outside projects.  Still, I’m driven by an insatiable desire to create original content – both alone and with my story partner, Roger Vizard.

A few years back, we got hung up on structural problems in a screenplay that we were working on, which lead me down a rabbit hole of endless theories and structural paradigms.  It was a necessary exploration, and happy to say that I came out the other side far more educated and enlightened.

It was this experience that led to the development of STORY COMPASS ® - an app that is with me all the time while I write now.  No need to get into the details here, but the complete backstory and tutorials are here:

The fact is, stories play an important role in every facet of our lives - and you’ve got to write them down, or they are lost forever.  And if you can structure those stories in a way that ebbs and flows with a natural story rhythm, all the better.  These days I’m outside the studio system (working in cinematic VR), but my daily thoughts are always centric to writing and story development.

Our latest personal project: SPIRITS OF THE WESTERN WILD is an audio drama adaptation of a screenplay co-written with Roger Vizard.  We are happy to finally get it out there on this Virtual Book Tour… where I am writing to you in another form on this post.

As varied as my days might be, there are common threads that make the writing process feel somewhat routine, and here is what that looks like: The laptop is always with me – along with my external drives and power bank, so I’m never stranded without power.  I literally steal moments whenever I can to chip away at the latest project, whatever it might be.  I know, it’s not that uncommon these days…

But what I cherish most are the times to myself, where I can write uninterrupted… and that generally boils down to the weekends.  So you think I would crave the quiet peacefulness of my home-office, right?  It turns out… no.  I find it far too isolating.  Maybe I’m just conditioned from years of chaos, but I actually need stimulation to produce.

So the computer goes into my backpack, onto the bike and down to the local Coffee Bean.  That’s where I am now, with buzz and activity all around.  For some reason, ideas seem to be spawned by the energy level in here.

Of course, there are times when I really need the silence – and that’s when I’m focusing on dialogue.  It sounds like a good time to go back to the peaceful quiet of home, right?  Nope.

Just around the corner is the newly constructed public library in Manhattan Beach. Upstairs is all glass, overlooking the expanse of the Pacific Ocean.  It’s an inspired writing spot with plenty of “quiet” activity around to help maintain the energy level.  It’s here that I can focus – churning out dialogue while the sun dips into the ocean out there.

These moments are the snapshots of the ideal writing life for me… and would love to see it multiplied.  Every day of the week would be great!  But for now, there are bills to pay, so I’ll have to steal these moments when I can.

I was recently inspired to document this journey on Instagram.  I’ve posted photos of the above, writing quotes, and development ups and downs of our latest project as we kick it down the road in pursuit of making the film:

I thought it would be entertaining to plot the twists, turns, and writing inspirations as we go.  I’m sure there will be lots of discoveries, insights, and takeaways on the bumpy road ahead.  Please follow and enjoy the ride.

And happy writing to all of you!

A Day in the Life of Mystery Author Duane Byrge @byrge_duane #writing #author #adayinthelife

August 22, 2019 0 Comments

A Day in the Life is Literarily Speaking’s newest feature. Here we get a glimpse into our favorite author’s day-to-day life! Today’s guest is Duane Byrge, author of the mystery novel, The Red Carpet at Cannes.

I write early in the morning before my  brain  is clogged with  daily minutiae.  I  find I am more creative then.  Plus, in my  prior life as head film critic for The Hollywood Reporter, I had a 10 a.m deadline for my reviews of movies I had screened the evening before at the studios. I write for roughly 2-3 hours in  the mornings, and then work-out, mixing cardio with weights.

My  day-job, teaching film and journalism at Virginia State University, stretches from early afternoon to roughly 9 p.m. I  find the mix of writing, exercising, and teaching enables optimal creativity, both on  the written page and in  the classroom. Also, keeps my  endorphin popping.

I usually  unwind by watching football or,  in the off-season, banging away  on the piano, listening to Frank Sinatra and the Rolling Stones,  and day-trading. I am currently  learning Norwegian.

A Wisconsin native, Byrge holds a Ph.D. in Communications, with an emphasis in Cinema, from the University of Southern California, where he has served as a lecturer. His Ph.D. dissertation was the basis for the book, “The Screwball Comedy Films,” which he co-authored. The book was re-released in hardcover in 1991 by McFarland Publishing and re-released in paperback in 2001 as part of the publication’s Classic Series.
Currently an assistant professor of Mass Communications at Virginia State University, Byrge teaches journalism, motion picture history and appreciation, and mass communications. He is working on a book on movie producers, “Before the Shooting Begins,” which will be published by the University of California, Berkeley Press.

About the Book:

Title: THE RED CARPET AT CANNES
Author: Duane Byrge
Publisher: Independent
Pages: 235
Genre: Mystery

BOOK BLURB:
Veteran film critic Duane Byrge takes readers on a behind-the-scenes thrill ride at the legendary Cannes Film Festival in his new mystery, THE RED CARPET AT CANNES.

A longtime movie writer and editor for the Hollywood Reporter, Byrge turns to the thriller genre to tell the tale of Ryan Hackbart, who, like Byrge, covers the Cannes Film Festival for the fictional Hollywood Times.

Hackbart finds himself in the middle of a Hitchcock-style mystery as he becomes the prime suspect in the murder of the lead actress of the festival's opening-night film. Interrogated but released, his passport is confiscated, and he is hounded by the world media. He must solve the murder before the culprit kills him or the police arrest him.

Aided by his female companion, Delisha, Ryan's investigation thrusts Hackbart into the underbelly of the most glamorous film festival in the world and opens his eyes to what lies underneath the glitz and glamour.

After a long, successful career as a film journalist, Byrge decided to change to the novel format to tell his story.

“You can reveal truths within a novel that you can’t convey with the ‘facts’ of a news story,” Byrge explains. “It allows me to flesh out the full story of the events I have covered.”

THE RED CARPET AT CANNES will please mystery fans and film buffs alike. It's a five-star travelogue straight into a celebrity universe of dazzling parties, high-end cuisine, superstar celebrities, high fashion, and movie-world politics.
