Thanks for visiting Literarily Speaking! Today's post is a first chapter review for FLOATING UNDERWATER, Tracy Shawn's latest women's fiction. First, a little about the book....

Title: FLOATING UNDERWATER
Author: Tracy Shawn
Publisher: Turbulent Muse Publishing
Pages: 312
Genre: Women’s Fiction / Magical Realism / Psychological Fiction

Part psychological fiction and part mystical fiction with a dash of magical realism, Floating Underwater follows a woman’s astonishing journey through the extraordinary and, ultimately, to her self-actualization and power.

Fearful that her lifelong premonitions not only predict the future but can also change its very course, Paloma Leary is devastated when her latest vision foretelling a third miscarriage comes true.

Falling into a mystifying world of increasingly bizarre phenomena, including a psychic connection with her mysterious neighbor, out-of-body experiences, and visits from her long-dead mother, Paloma grows desperate for answers. She is also desperate to start a family. But when a life-changing vision reveals a tragic secret from the past, Paloma learns to accept her gifts and embraces a far different future than she ever could have imagined.

FAVORITE QUOTE FROM FIRST CHAPTER:

She swallowed down the murky taste of dread. (This was one of many but love this)

BOOK COVER:

I was in love with this first chapter ever since I saw the cover. A distraught woman feels as if she's drowning. But why is the question? Had to keep reading.

FIRST CHAPTER REVIEW:

Before I begin this first chapter review, I have to make note that Tracy Shawn is one heluva writer. With that out of the way, let's dive in. So we have Paloma and Reed sitting outside at a deli. From the get go, Shawn was able to describe the scene with lots of imagery. I actually felt hot. We find out that Paloma is expecting, but there is an apprehension of the pregnancy not going to plan as she lost her other baby (I'm presuming miscarriage). I can't imagine what the young couple is going through having had that happen. I'm feeling lots of apprehension coming from Paloma. The chapter ends with something really strange. It's a woman who seems to be following them. She appears and reappears. So I'm figuring this woman is going to have something to do with the rest of the story because I don't feel the author would have thrown that in at the end of this first chapter without it meaning something.

Absolutely! The author has stirred the pot and I'm ready to jump right in!
