Her Grandma/Grandpa’s Tales, short illustrated nature stories, help the youngest readers build their reading skills. At the 2nd grade reading level, these stories are suitable for readers aged 4 and up.
She also does classroom & zoom visits where students can create their own Illuminated Poetry.
As retired teachers, Cheryl and her husband love to travel. They attend college football games around the US each year and also travel abroad for fun and research. They’ve been to Egypt, the UK, Iceland, Norway, Mexico & the Caribbean.

From my 25 years of experience with diverse readers, I’ve found that stories from the Ancient Worlds and Arthurian Legend draw in readers of all abilities.
As a high school English teacher, I continually challenged my students to find connections between today & times long gone by. Some took more digging than others, but the connections were always there. We talked about Sophocles’ Antigone and how she was really the first woman to stand up for women’s rights.
It was my students’ answers to the question of what they knew about Guinevere, King Arthur’s queen, that really inspired my writing career. I got the same answer year after year: She married Arthur, cheated on him, and was the downfall of Camelot! That answer never changed. I decided that my writing would start with a story of the girl Guinevere. She was never given a choice; her future was decided for her. As a 13-year-old, she struggled with who she wanted to be and what was expected of her. And so, my Guinevere trilogy was born: Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend, Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend, and Guinevere: The Legend.
Your latest book, Under the Norse Star (Feathers of the Phoenix Book 2), is a time-travel fantasy with coming-of-age elements and mythology. How did you come up with this very unique idea?
I’ve always been fascinated with the lost island of Atlantis. Initially, I picked five ancient settings for the series based on my love of mythology and the ancient stories. The Atlantean Horse, book 1, is set on the small island of Telendos off the Greece mainland. I wanted some place relatively unknown with some mystery to it. Under the Norse Star, takes place in an ancient Iceland which abounds with mythology sagas (tales of the Icelanders).
Can you tell us more about the main character in your book?
Rosa and her cousin Jerome share the main character distinction. They are both composites of all my students over the years: eager for adventure, trying to figure out who they are and want to be, cautious, and caring individuals.
What's the very first sentence of your book?
Standing here in my backyard, a slight breeze ruffles my blond hair with its emerald streak, my tribute to the queen who showed me the value of Nana’s gift.
You are a person of enormous influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be?
To encourage everyone to look out more for each other: We all want to have the best life possible for us and our family. That means being understanding, having patience, and helping others when you can.
