Title: A HISTORY OF THE GODDESS: FROM THE ICE AGE TO THE BIBLE
Author: Edward Dodge
Publisher: Trine Day Books
Pages: 472
Genre: Mythology / Religion
BOOK BLURB
This book explores the Goddess worshipping traditions that were always a part of human spirituality but were eliminated in the Bible on the path to monotheism. There is an unexplored narrative in the Bible, the early Israelites were pagan and God had a wife, her name is Asherah and she appears many times in the Bible. The Earthly Mother and the Heavenly Father were the original gods far back in history and they got a divorce in the Old Testament so that God could rule alone. But the Earthly Mother never went away and we can follow her traditions through Christianity and into the modern world.
The religious wars of the past that eliminated these women-led Goddess religions are directly reflected in today’s culture wars where the secular left is struggling to break free of the moral dictates of religious conservatives. In the Goddess temples of antiquity, we see unbridled feminism, egalitarianism, nature worship, sexual freedom for women and gays, cannabis and sacred plants, transgendered people as high priests, even abortions. The world today is in flux and many people are rediscovering the Feminine Divine, she is an important part of our collective experience.

I could almost say this was the most interesting book I have ever read. A HISTORY OF THE GODDESS: FROM THE ICE AGE TO THE BIBLE is written in easy to understand language. I was afraid it was going to go over my head; but instead it held me spellbound, mesmerized; almost as if I was absorbing every angle that the author took me. I wanted to know where religions came from. I wanted to know when gods became God. So many unanswered questions; yet, this book held satisfactory answers to the point where I could walk away and go, ‘Wow, so that’s where it came from or so that’s the question I’ve been asking myself all my life.’
The author writes, “Goddess shows us that there is a whole other side to spirituality and religion that Western culture is not well acquainted with.” Aha! He is so right and that’s why I chose this book to show me this other side of spirituality and indeed it did!
I guess I need to brush up on the bible because we are told, “Cannabis is Eve’s sacred plant and Moses’ holy smoke.” Okay okay I didn’t know that. So cannabis took on a different viewpoint back in the holy days. Wonder what happened as time progressed?
Did you know Hebrews started out as pagans? This book just kept getting more interesting.
We are taken back to the origins of mankind. We read up on the different types of human civilizations throughout time and their different beliefs which I found very interesting. Religion does play an important part of this book as the author discusses goddesses throughout time and their roles they played.
What I found was that this isn’t so much of a ‘where did goddesses come from’ book but more of ‘where did we as humans come from and what role goddesses had in shaping our lives from the beginning’ and how we can use this knowledge to better our lives in today’s world.
Here’s a little tidbit of info you might find interesting. The author suggests that the apple that Eve supposedly ate and instructed Adam to eat as well wasn’t actually an apple. It was cannabis. Cannabis was supposed to open up your mind to things you wouldn’t ordinarily think about. When Eve bit into the apple, I presume her mind opened up and she became aware she was naked.
I really enjoyed reading this book and the knowledge that was brought forth in order for me to understand my own world a little better. If we want to understand the term ‘goddess’ in its entirety, A History of the Goddess is the ticket.
