He began his legal career at the Legal Aid Society in Trenton, New Jersey, later practicing poverty law at Western Massachusetts Legal Services. A former US Institute of Peace Fellow, he cofounded and directed New Mexicans for a Bilateral Nuclear Freeze and created The Trinity Forum for International Security and Conflict Resolution. Can you share a story about what brought you to this particular path as an author?

I have always enjoyed writing. I've kept a journal since 1972, when I left my budding law career behind and traveled overland from Europe to Afghanistan, India, and Nepal in my twenties — a journey that changed the course of my life. For fifty years, those journals and memories stayed with me. After I retired from practicing law in 2012, I wrote my first book, Breaking Big Money's Grip on America, which grew out of my years as a political activist. But there was a more compelling, personal story I still needed to tell: how my unrest and dissatisfaction as a young attorney from Camden, New Jersey, propelled me halfway around the world to a Tibetan monastery outside Kathmandu where I learned and practiced Buddhist meditation. And how letting go of the narrow legal path I was on led me to a much broader highway where I discovered what I needed to know to get where I wanted to be. That story became my memoir, From Camden to Kathmandu.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you during the course of your career?

While I was writing my first book, Breaking Big Money's Grip on America, I began dating a woman who also happened to be writing a book of poetry. I sent her drafts of chapters from my manuscript to get her feedback. This went on for several months as we got to know each other better and became closer. We soon became lovers and have now been living together for over ten years.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in your journey writing your book? What was the biggest challenge you faced in your journey writing your book?

The biggest challenge was maintaining a writing routine. I started out writing three or four hours, three days a week. But other responsibilities and events got in the way. So, some weeks I didn’t write at all. When my mother died, I didn’t write for four months. I still find it difficult to keep to a writing schedule, given my political activities, service work, family responsibilities, travel and more.

What is the main empowering lesson you want your readers to take away after finishing your book?

The main empowering lesson I want my readers to grasp is the more they let go and open themselves up to the energy of the universe and allow that energy to guide them, the richer and more fulfilling their lives will be. I didn't know where we were going when I threw in with four vagabonds I had just met in the basement of a third-rate Athens hotel and bought a vintage VW bus, but trusting the universe led me to the amazing journey that followed.

What is one habit you believe contributed the most to you becoming a great writer?

I’ve kept a journal for over fifty years. Recording my thoughts, observations and feelings on a regular basis has given me a wealth of material to work with. Even though what I write about may have occurred many years ago, the events in my journal were recorded when they actually happened, making them feel fresh and alive.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be?

The Oneness Movement would focus on people connecting to the oneness of the universe. That is, people in the movement would be instilled with the concept that we are all part of one universal energy or system. Such a movement would encourage people to understand that we are all interconnected and our similarities are much greater than our differences. Therefore, coming together and working together would be most beneficial for the greater good and the future of the planet. I first glimpsed this oneness at a monastery outside Kathmandu in 1973.

Where to purchase the book?

From Camden to Kathmandu is available at Amazon.

In 1972, Bruce Berlin — a young poverty lawyer from Camden, New Jersey — set off on a journey with no clear destination. What began as a restless escape became one of the most formative adventures of his life. Traveling overland through Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan at a time when those borders were still open to wanderers, Berlin found himself riding across the Afghan desert in the back of a truck with armed men and their rugs, navigating a world that would soon be transformed by war.

In India, something shifted. Visits to the sacred Buddhist sites of Bodh Gaya and Sarnath planted a seed. Then, in Kathmandu, a chance encounter with former law school classmates led Berlin to a month-long Tibetan Buddhist retreat at Kopan Monastery — an experience he would later describe as perhaps the most important month of his life. Guided by Lama Yeshe and Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, Berlin began a practice that would sustain him for the next fifty years.

From Camden to Kathmandu is a memoir about following the open road before you know where it’s going — and discovering that the destination finds you. Written with the documentary authenticity of real letters sent home, it is the story of a restless young man’s transformation into a meditator, activist, and lifelong seeker.

Today we are interviewing Cheryl Carpinello, author of the YA,  Under the Norse Star: Feathers of the Phoenix Book 2 (Silver Quill Publishing).

Cheryl Carpinello is a retired high school English teacher. Her Tales and Legends appeal to readers of all ages, particularly those who have struggled with reading. Through her 25 years teaching diverse readers, she’s found that stories from the Ancient Worlds and Arthurian Legend draw in readers of all abilities.

She writes Arthurian Legend focused on these cornerstones: Courage, Honor, Loyalty, & Friendship. Her tales from Egypt & the new series Feathers of the Phoenix meld the ancient/medieval worlds with today. The Atlantean Horse and Under the Norse Star, books 1 &2 of Feathers of the Phoenix, brings the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse out of the Bible & into the modern world.

Her Grandma/Grandpa’s Tales, short illustrated nature stories, help the youngest readers build their reading skills. At the 2nd grade reading level, these stories are suitable for readers aged 4 and up.

She also does classroom & zoom visits where students can create their own Illuminated Poetry.

As retired teachers, Cheryl and her husband love to travel. They attend college football games around the US each year and also travel abroad for fun and research. They’ve been to Egypt, the UK, Iceland, Norway, Mexico & the Caribbean.

Can you share a story about what brought you to this particular path as an author?

From my 25 years of experience with diverse readers, I’ve found that stories from the Ancient Worlds and Arthurian Legend draw in readers of all abilities.

As a high school English teacher, I continually challenged my students to find connections between today & times long gone by. Some took more digging than others, but the connections were always there. We talked about Sophocles’ Antigone and how she was really the first woman to stand up for women’s rights.

It was my students’ answers to the question of what they knew about Guinevere, King Arthur’s queen, that really inspired my writing career. I got the same answer year after year: She married Arthur, cheated on him, and was the downfall of Camelot! That answer never changed. I decided that my writing would start with a story of the girl Guinevere. She was never given a choice; her future was decided for her. As a 13-year-old, she struggled with who she wanted to be and what was expected of her. And so, my Guinevere trilogy was born: Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend, Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend, and Guinevere: The Legend.

Your latest book, Under the Norse Star (Feathers of the Phoenix Book 2), is a time-travel fantasy with coming-of-age elements and mythology. How did you come up with this very unique idea?

I’ve always been fascinated with the lost island of Atlantis. Initially, I picked five ancient settings for the series based on my love of mythology and the ancient stories. The Atlantean Horse, book 1, is set on the small island of Telendos off the Greece mainland. I wanted some place relatively unknown with some mystery to it. Under the Norse Star, takes place in an ancient Iceland which abounds with mythology sagas (tales of the Icelanders).

Can you tell us more about the main character in your book?

Rosa and her cousin Jerome share the main character distinction. They are both composites of all my students over the years: eager for adventure, trying to figure out who they are and want to be, cautious, and caring individuals.

Who are the other main characters?

Mneseus is an ancient Atlantean that helps Rosa and Jerome by transporting them to the destinations.

Njal is the Icelandic cat that may or may not prove helpful!

The Horseman riding a Nykur with the red mane and tale.

What's the very first sentence of your book?

Standing here in my backyard, a slight breeze ruffles my blond hair with its emerald streak, my tribute to the queen who showed me the value of Nana’s gift.

What's the main reason someone should really read your book?

I hope the devotion and love Rosa and Jerome have for each other and their families resonates with readers of all ages. Also, their willingness to help out whenever they can.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be?

To encourage everyone to look out more for each other: We all want to have the best life possible for us and our family. That means being understanding, having patience, and helping others when you can.

Where to purchase the book?

My store: https://cheryl-carpinello.square.site.  I send those books out myself and sign/personalize them.

On Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Cheryl-Carpinello/e/B002GGGZY6

Barnes&Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w?ean=9781804401316

Rosa can hear the dead. That gift has already pulled her into impossible places… and deadly danger.

Now, on the Autumnal Equinox, Rosa and her cousin Jerome are summoned again. Their mission: travel to Iceland, the Land of Fire and Ice, and retrieve the second Golden Red Feather of the Phoenix. Because only when all five Feathers are united can Atlantis rise from the ocean depths and its lost people finally return home.

But Iceland isn’t empty.

Ancient guardians still roam beneath the Norse Star… and something far worse has arrived first. A shapeshifting Horseman rides the frozen wilderness, hunting the Feather, and willing to kill for it.

With earthquakes shaking the land, wicked laughter in the wind, and a mysterious Ancient One waiting in the ice, Rosa and Jerome must survive the most dangerous quest yet… before time runs out.

For readers who don't know you yet, who is Luke Uebelher?

Luke Uebelher is a follower of Jesus Christ, having dedicated his life to the Lord while serving in the U.S. Marines during his tour of duty in the Persian Gulf War, Desert Storm. Following his service in the Marine Corps, Luke worked in various professions to include public safety, construction and sales before establishing his own business in the trucking industry as an independent contractor.

In 2012, Luke responded to God’s Call and Kingdom Purposes to begin serving the needs of sex-trafficking and domestic violence survivors by working with ministries led by trafficking and abuse survivors. His work in the Lord expanded to serving the needs of homeless Military Veterans in 2015 through 2017, working in partnership with a ministry in Southern California.

In 2018, Luke’s work for God’s Kingdom expanded internationally when he married his Wife, Maggie, and he travels between the United States and the Philippines for business and ministry. He and Maggie have devoted themselves to supporting and serving the needs of Pastors and Ministry Leaders in the Philippines, in addition to the ministries that Luke serves and supports in the United States.

In 2023, Luke and his book, “The Faithful, The Fearful & The Foolish: Living for God in Troubled Times” were featured and interviewed at the Hong Kong Book Conference with Readers Magnet.” Following this, Luke’s work for God’s Kingdom expanded into Hong Kong and Macau, China, serving in partnership with Philippine Pastors, to serve the needs of Filipinos who live and work in Hong Kong and Macau, China, teaching and empowering them in financial stewardship, managing a long distance marriage, discipleship and setting boundaries to protect themselves from abuse at the hands of their foreign employers. All the work that Luke and Maggie do for God’s Kingdom is funded by his business in the trucking industry.

Can you tell us a little about your book, The Faithful, The Fearful & The Foolish: Living for God in Troubled Times?

“The Faithful, the Fearful & The Foolish: Living for God in Troubled Times” was published in December 2022 (NCC Publishing, Inc), and is a result of a message of the Holy Spirit to God’s people to overcome the fear of man, learn to be effective in the Business of God, and prepare ourselves to Rule and Reign with Christ. The Holy Spirit began ministering to Luke about this message in 2019, with the conclusion of the writing of the book in the late summer of 2022, and submitting it for publication.

The focus of the message of the book is taken from the Parable of the Talents in Luke 19:12–27, with Scripture from both the Old and New Testaments to guide and empower each reader to overcome the fear of man, learn to effectively do the Business of God, and prepare themselves to Rule and Reign with Christ in order to advance God’s Kingdom in a world that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ, and empower others to do the same. The message of the book does not “tickle people’s ears,” but rather teaches and guides each reader to cultivate a genuine hunger and thirst for Righteousness, grow in their Faith and submission to the Authority of God’s Word, and to esteem the Kingdom of God over our culture of selfishness that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ.

Who will benefit from your books and how is this book different from other books of this genre?

Everyone who has an interest in overcoming fear, particularly the fear of man, to pursue God’s Kingdom Purposes for their lives will find this book to be very helpful. Additionally, the message of the book will stir readers to a hunger and thirst for Righteousness, arise out of complacency and cowardice, and grow in the confidence of Christ. A significant aspect of the message of the book is in guiding readers to learn the importance of bringing our lives into agreement and submission to God’s Word by Faith through Jesus Christ, so that we may walk in the favor and authority of God, to restrain and overcome the works of darkness, and live a life that Honors and Glorifies God, and empowers others to do the same. Each chapter concludes with questions that call each reader to self reflection, personal growth, and a call to action to be Faithful and Fruitful in the Business of God. This book is an excellent resource to help readers grow in Discipleship, Christian Leadership, Spiritual Transformation, and developing mental and emotional stability in these troubled times.

What's next for you?

While Luke did not previously see himself as an author, nor did he aspire to be an author, he did recognize the call of God to write the book, “The Faithful, The Fearful & The Foolish: Living for God in Troubled Times,” and the importance of living and teaching the message of the book to empower and disciple others to become effective in the Business of God. Luke understands this is a Calling from God, not a career, and it requires that he continually grows in his own effectiveness for God’s Kingdom so he may inspire, empower, and lead others in Godliness. It is Luke’s desire to see God Glorified in the lives of others, as he helps them abound in their Faith. Luke is a small business owner, who’s passion is to advance God’s Kingdom by empowering others to grow in the Greatness of God, as he works toward his goal of being with his wife, Maggie, full-time and pursuing God’s Kingdom Purposes together.

Here is a timely word for the Church of Jesus Christ, for those who have a true desire to know and to be pleasing to God. The parable of the talents, while not necessarily an easy word to hear, is a much-needed word for the Church today. Brother Luke has perfectly captured the word of Jesus in his exposition on the parable of our Lord.
