First Chapter Review: Jury Duty is Murder by Kate Damon

Thanks for visiting Literarily Speaking!
Today's post is a first chapter review for JURY DUTY IS MURDER, Kate Damon's latest cozy mystery. First, a little about the book....

Blurb:

The verdict is in; a famed athlete is headed for prison. The jurors have done their job and are free to go back to their lives. But after being sequestered for four months, life as some knew it no longer exists.

HAROLD ASHMAN’s house is almost destroyed by a careless driver. Exotic dancer, CEECEE LAINE, discovers that her boyfriend is two-timing her, and she no longer has a job. Actor ALEX MANNING learns his career is down the tubes, and 72-year-old, HELEN RYDER, discovers her family is plotting to put her in an old folks home.

Then things take a turn for the worse. When former jurors start dropping like flies, CeeCee, Helen, Harold and Alex are convinced there’s a killer on the loose. Now the feuding foursome must find him before he kills them—or before they save him the trouble by killing each other.

Jury Duty is Murder is available at Amazon.

Book Cover:

I liked it to be honest. Colors work well, images are perfect.

Favorite Quote:

"I longed to eat something other than fast-food and boring, tasteless hotel fare. Read an honest-to-goodness newspaper on my iPad and Google till I’m cross-eyed. Have a conversation not monitored by a court official. Forget, absolutely forget, that I helped put a man behind bars, or maybe even death row."

First Chapter Review:

This first chapter is in the voice of one of the jurors named Harold aka Shoe. I don't know how I've been able to escape being called for jury duty, but if I were to be called, I would so be there. Harold makes great points about it not being as much fun as people think it might be - no phone, etc., but the psychological point of it probably is the worse. Should you deem them guilty, you have to live with that. I can't imagine being in control of someone's life like that. And Harold hated all aspects of it. So we have the trial over and Harold gets home, completely exhausted. Cameramen and journalists are outside his house wanting to know what it was like to give someone the death sentence. Then...an earthquake hits. I remember reading the book blurb and coming away thinking lots of things are going to happen to these jurors. Why I had no idea but in all seriousness, this is a book now I can't wait to read.

I really like how this book starts out. I'll be reviewing the whole book shortly but for a first chapter, it certainly had me intrigued. I will definitely be reading the rest of the book so stay tuned for that review.

Rating:

I give this first chapter a 5 star rating!
