5 Things You Should Know About Through Dangerous Doors: A Life At Risk by Robert Charles Lee #5Things

5 Things You Should Know About Through Dangerous Doors: A Life At Risk

1)      It’s an honest portrayal of my life’s journey learning how to manage risk.

2)      It represents my early life in a poor dysfunctional family as a major influence on my life’s path.

3)      It’s structured as a series of risky doors (the chapters of the book) that I chose to enter.

4)      It has a lot of mountain climbing in it, but it’s not about climbing.

5)      The second half of my life and the book features my wife Linda as my main partner in risky activities.

About the Author

Robert Charles Lee
is a retired risk scientist with over twenty-five years of academic and applied risk analysis, decision analysis, and risk management experience in a wide variety of contexts. He has authored over one hundred peer-reviewed scientific works, as well as over one hundred technical reports for industry and government agencies. Prior to the professional risk work he worked in laboratories a bit, but otherwise was a manual laborer until he reckoned that he could use his brain for a living.

Robert has a BS in Botany, a BS in Science Education, an MS in Environmental Health, and a Certificate in Integrated Business Administration. He is ABD (all but dissertation) in a Toxicology PhD program. He is an ordained Minister and has an honorary Doctorate of Metaphysics from the Universal Life Church and is a Member of the Nova Scotia L’Ordre du Bon Temps, or Order of the Good Time.

He was born in North Carolina and lived there for over twenty years, but has since lived in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and Alberta. He was also homeless for a time while a laborer in the Western United States. He currently resides in Colorado.

Robert and his wife Linda have climbed hundreds of technical and non-technical mountain, rock, ice, and canyon routes, hiked thousands of miles in several countries, and skied many miles of vertical feet at resorts and in the backcountry.

Robert is an avid amateur photographer, largely of outdoor subjects. He is a musician who plays hand, stick, and mallet percussion, and who can sing, but rarely does for unclear reasons. He is an amateur sound engineer and producer and has recorded more than a thousand written and improvisational instrumental pieces with other musicians to date. He was trying to learn to relax in retirement, but then he discovered non-technical writing. He has written a memoir and a poetry collection and is working on short stories.

Through Dangerous Doors is his latest book.

Book Description:

Title: THROUGH DANGEROUS DOORS
Author: Robert Charles Lee
Publisher: Wido / E.L. Marker
Pages: 212
Genre: Memoir

BOOK BLURB:

In a life defined by risk, Robert Charles Lee experiences a poor and free-ranging childhood in the racist South of the 1960s. After his father dies, the family grows dysfunctional. As a result, teen-age Robert seeks sanity and solace by rock climbing solo and driving cars fast. He wins a scholarship and graduates from university, but still seeks to escape the South.

Moving to Alaska and the Western US, Robert works in a series of dangerous and brutal jobs. He meets and marries Linda, who enjoys climbing and skiing difficult mountains as much as he does. Simultaneously, Robert trains in the science of risk to become a respected professional risk scientist.

Robert shares his remarkable story as he guides the reader through a series of dangerous but rewarding doors, culminating in a vivid journey of adventure and risk.

Praise

“Through Dangerous Doors is an engaging and snappily written reflection on a life charted by risk. Like the dangerous mountains he eventually comes to climb, Lee’s need to be on the edge and in the flow guide him on a fascinating ascent up the American socio-economic pyramid, a challenging mountain in itself, and geographically from the lowland South to high country of the North. Small wonder that when Lee and his wife arrive in Calgary, Alberta to live for a decade they immerse themselves in what Lee wisely comes to realize is one of the most dangerous, yet spiritually rewarding mountain ranges in the world – the Canadian Rockies. Lee’s lifelong evaluation, and refinement of, the risk versus reward calculation is educational. And I love the way he calls poppycock when he sees it. Lee shares life lessons that were hard won and valuable to all.” – Barry Blanchard, UIAGM/IFMGA Mountain Guide, author of The Calling – A Life Rocked by Mountains, winner of the Boardman-Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature

“Much more than a book on mountaineering, Robert Charles Lee’s memoir delves deeply into the relationship between risk and reward, exploring the things we can control and those we can’t. His journey of self-discovery has resulted in a thoughtful meditation on the nature of adventure and what makes for a life well lived. Lee’s story will resonate with any readers who have experienced the incomparable satisfaction of challenging themselves while at the same time understanding the wisdom of respecting their limits.” –Scott Zesch, author of “The Captured,” winner of the TCU Texas Book Award

“This is a memoir like few others, in that the author is intent on beseeching his readers not to follow the example of his own life. The story he tells shows that this is very good advice indeed, but nevertheless his tale of improbable escapes from one looming disaster after another is both instructive and entertaining.” – William Leiss, Queen’s University, author of: In the Chamber of Risks: Understanding Risk Controversies, Mad Cows and Mother’s Milk: The Perils of Poor Risk Communication, and Risk and Responsibility

“In this engaging and very readable memoir, Robert Lee reminds us that life IS risk. Humans only continue to learn, grow and evolve through facing and conquering risks. Whether the risks are involuntary or voluntary, Lee aptly emphasizes that the key to survival, or even thriving, is how we choose to understand and manage those risks. While Lee’s recounting of his numerous climbing risk adventures reflects his personal approach to risk and risk management, his stories will resonate strongly with anyone who seeks the challenge and stimulation of being a ‘risk taker’. This book will ultimately make you examine more closely your own life in relation to the risks you choose or don’t choose to undertake.” – Cindy Jardine, University of the Fraser Valley, world record skydiver

“As autobiographies like Educated and The Glass Castle have taught us, growing up through hardship can be remarkably annealing. So too in this disarmingly honest memoir, where Lee relates his annealed response. He adeptly strings us along his extraordinary lifepath from childhood until retirement using an idiosyncratic lens: A meditation on risk serves as Lee’s through-line, one informed by his career in risk analysis. Sit and enjoy the windfall of a raconteur relaying how he and his fellow travelers have encountered and responded to risks. Many encounters, like his vivid recounts of ice and mountain climbing, are quite intense. We get a taste of life as a forester, psychedelic-explorer, musician, academic, blessed husband and alpinist.  Some entrancing events, nicely infused with a humble `stock-taking’ of the cards that were dealt, and the choices made. An extraordinary story that resonates beyond risk.” – Kevin Brand, University of Ottawa

““Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all” wrote Helen Keller in her passageway focused book The Open Door. Metaphorical passageways hurtle us in and out of the risky exploits of Mr. Lee in Through Dangerous Doors. Climbing on a glacier or rappelling down a mountain, Lee shows us the thrill of daring adventure. But risk is not the goal, it is the price paid for adventure – and sometimes that price is too high. Lee helps us see that managing risk, sometimes with tools or technology and sometimes by knowing when to say no, is the key to continuing to be able to pass through new doors.” –  George Gray, George Washington University, co-author of Risk: A Practical Guide for Deciding What’s Really Safe and What’s Really Dangerous in the World Around You

Review Corner: IF THEY CAN'T KISS RIGHT: SURVIVING ONLINE DATING by Shannon Yingst #bookreview #bookcorner

Title: IF THEY CAN’T KISS RIGHT: SURVIVING ONLINE DATING
Author: Shannon Yingst
Publisher: Tyburn Hill Media Co.
Pages: 150
Genre: Creative Nonfiction

BOOK BLURB:

Warning: Adult Content

Online dating: the new way of life. It seems like the only logical way to meet people anymore. The rest of our lives are on the internet, so why not our love lives too? Because if you wait for your friends to set you up, you’ll only be disappointed with their choice of Roger from accounting, the epitome of mouth breathing, booger eating morons.

Fortunately, there are no Rogers from accounting in this tale. There are, however, many other bad choices. But along the way, I learned what I want, and what I don’t want in a relationship. I learned good qualities to seek and bad qualities to leave behind. I also learned a lot about myself in the process, too. The biggest gain I got from my foray into online dating, though? Writing this book and passing along some of the life lessons I discovered through a painful trial-and-error process.

If you think your dating life is bad, take a gander at mine. Relive the awkward moments, soak in the unnecessary drama, and don’t forget to learn a thing or two. Men and women alike will be able to read this and take-home solid dating advice for the future.

Laugh. Learn. Love. Question why some humans are so insane. Maybe even see yourself in some of the pages. But above all, take to heart all the things I figured out along the way. It’ll save you the heartache and trouble. Trust me.

I have to admit it. I have tried online dating but not through a chat room or anything like that. Years ago, I struck up a conversation with the brother of an online friend. We did bond through our messages to one another and we even met once. While I did feel some kind of a love bond with him, nothing amounted to anything. It was a long distant relationship and neither one of us was willing to make that commitment to move.
I couldn't wait to read If They Can't Kiss Right: Surviving Online Dating by Shannon Yingst. From the very first moment I opened the book, I was drawn into Shannon's story. She was both frank and honest in her memoir about cyber-dating and is definitely worth a read if you are interested in getting the lowdown about online dating from someone who has been there done that.
While I didn't find the author's photo to be anything other than beautiful, Shannon felt the opposite and that's one reason why she tried to find someone to spend her life with or at least go out on a date to see where it may lead.
The author starts off with the story about a guy from England. This one sounded legit (not like CatFish on TV). They did meet a couple of times a year but in the end it just didn't work out. Shannon leaves out nothing as she tells us about her other online dating encounters. Some graphic; some not, but she gives us a warning in case you're squeemish about those kind of things.
One thing I thought was right smart. She quotes, "Send a picture, or name and number, before any online date meet-ups." This is what she and the 'Bad Bitches' (her group of the closest friends she had) had agreed upon before going on any online encounters. Right smart.
I thoroughly and honestly enjoyed hearing about the author's candid escapades with the opposite sex. Laughed out loud after a lot of them. Men are truly full of themselves, aren't they? After reading this book, I came to the conclusion that men are definitely from Mars and some of them don't have a clue as to what they're doing. Granted, most of these escapades weren't about starting long term relationships and more about sex, but it did open up my eyes to a lot of things I wasn't aware of.
I give this book high praise for its entertaining value, helpful words and wisdom regarding the opposite sex, and overall enjoyment. Five stars!

Throughout history we have wanted to understand the circumstances of our lives and our relationships with others. We have had a profound desire to know ourselves on the deepest  levels, to make sound decisions, and to receive guidance from  the Divine.

The Tarot is a set of universal principles that provide a visual system which reveals both your True Nature and the obstacles to living from this Unified State of Consciousness. Tradition ally and cross-culturally these archetypes communicate all the aspects of existence. Through these rich symbolic mirrors you can receive messages about where you are at present, an external issue, a relationship, your career, and an inner psychological state—in fact all aspects of your evolutionary journey.  In the following pages, you will touch on how to tap into inner guidance and awaken internal allies. This book was writ ten for you to draw assistance from the symbols of your soul’s journey as each card is like a magic talisman.

As you explore the visual symbols of each Tarot card, you are given different components that add to your understanding of its meaning. After the visuals there are: a short meaning; descriptions; key words to summarize them; reflective suggestions to go into your process; questions to ponder; and an affirmation. In the descriptions there are correlations with Astrology, Numerology, the Tree of Life, the Hero’s Journey, and the general process of evolution. I have included the Hebrew letter for each of the Major Arcana, and the I Ching’s association to the Royalty cards.

Toward the end of the book, you will learn to find your life’s path, your yearly path, some inner teachers, and sample readings for you to try. Please take what is useful for you and ignore the rest. For those of you who want to dive in deeper, there are several dense teaching chapters that I include in Part VII, “Integrating the Tarot.” Altogether these systems can assist your assimilation of each card, as their cosmic voices can exert a powerful support for you. When you use the cards, you not only have a self-reflective tool, a device to awaken intuition, but also a suggestive magnifier of the qualities you want to infuse into your life.

This book is a part of a series called, A Toolkit for Awakening, which is based on the eminent mythologist, Joseph Camp bell’s great blueprint, “The Hero’s Journey.” It is from his classic book, A Hero with a Thousand Faces (1948). This formula for spiritual evolution, presented in Chapter 83 and the conclusion, gives the structure and foundation of this series.

The stage of the Hero’s Journey that this book deals with is called “Supernatural Aids.” You are encouraged to seek helpers, animate and inanimate, seen and unseen, ancient and mod ern. You don’t have to rely solely upon your own innate powers.  Magical helpers appear once you are on the spiritual path as you see abundantly in myths and fairy tales. This book suggests that the Tarot is “a supernatural aid,” for these cards are external mirrors from which you can hear your inner guidance.

Having support is one of life’s most valuable assets. I am thankful for all the support I have received. Yet because I have chosen “a road less traveled,” my deepest gratitude has been to those invisible forces—the archetypes (also called universal symbols). Exploring interrelated metaphysical systems, like Tarot, Astrology, and Numerology have given me the keys to the human journey. “Meta” means beyond, for these maps of consciousness go outside the physical to bridge existence with causality. As you play with the archetypes themselves, they become intuitive and active spiritual allies.

There is a vast array of metaphysical oracles to help you gain self–knowledge. You can delve into the many different cosmic looking glasses to muse and reflect. You can pick cards, gaze at charts and maps, throw coins, select stones, add some numbers, dream, visualize, meditate, or open a book randomly for a message, and they will become your guideposts and supportive tools that help you to see another way and wake up to the highest aspects of yourself.

My hope is that the Tarot images, the concepts presented in this book, and the series, A Toolkit for Awakening, will be a source of support for you. The empowering myth of the Goddess Warrior on the Hero’s Journey is the underlying basis of this series. Love and allowing are the ways of the Goddess. Being accountable for your time, attention and intention is how you embody the Warrior. These archetypes become your helpers and infuse higher vibrations to facilitate new states of consciousness.

My inner and outer helpers guide me and inspire me along my sacred path of expressing Divine Light.

Interview:

Welcome, Darren! Your book, AWAKENING THE AVATAR WITHIN YOU sounds absolutely mesmerizing. Can you recount your earliest memory of your own spiritual awakening?

For me, spiritual awakening is different than the way I hear other people and books describe it. Rather than having any big, dramatic "awakening" experiences, I feel like I was born awake in some fundamental way. I was aware at a very youndyoung age that the reality presented to me by my parents and others was only a small part of what really is. I couldn't formulate that in words and concepts, it was just a knowing that I was a cosmic, divine being in a human body. As a child, I used to find myself fantasizing about sending out healing energies to heal people all over the Earth. So, although I was highly aware of a greater field of consciousness since childhood that didn't make me a happy person. I grew up with chronic low-grade depression and alienation, which arose from the big gap I felt between what I sensed to be real and my everyday life. That drove me to explore first drugs, then spirituality in my teenage years. I joined a pilgrimage to India when I was 19 years old to be with an enlightened spiritual master called Maharaj Ji, and spent most of my 20's living in what was called ashrams - houses dedicated to meditation and service. Once that phase ended, around my 30th year, I did a great deal of inner emotional clearing and healing and developing businesses.

So for me, awakening is not the main need, it has been healing my body and emotions and embodying more of the Avatar I have always known myself to be. That is the thrust of my latest book.

Let’s say I wanted to awaken my own avatar. Where would I start?

With coming more fully into your body. I outline foundational practices for doing that in the Getting Started section of my new book Awakening the Avatar Within, right up frontupfront. It is through developing body awareness, and letting go of the dictatorship of the mind, that you start directly experiencing yourself as an Avatar. The book also outlines other practices and self-discovery processes that will keep your awakening and embodying your Avatar self.

Is being an avatar, lightworker, or Divine Self, the same thing?

They overlap, but not the same.  Divine Self is who you really are and have always been.  Divine Self requires no development, enlightenment, or education.  It already is. Avatar is a human being embodying their Divine Self for a purpose. Lightworker is a job description that some Avatars fulfill.  Other Avatars have different job descriptions. All of this is explained in Chapter 16 of the book.

I love that you practice Planetary Healing. How can you really help heal the planet? Isn’t that kind of over-reaching?

Over-reaching what the small self believes is possible is where it's at!  Planetary Healing is not something accomplished by an individual. When lots of Avatar/Lightworkers focus their love and positive vision together we are unstoppable and can literally heal the planet. We, together are the oft-prophesied second coming of Christ. Planetary Healing is part of my daily practice, and I sense that I am joining with a vast Team Light of people with love in their hearts as well as non-human light beings who are working to help pull the human race through this critical time.

Can you explain to us why it was important for you to write your book?

It is a vital part of my personal mission, which is to help awaken and activate other people as Avatars and Lightworkers. This is my fourth book, and when it is time for me to write a book I start getting impulsed with inspirations, ideas and images. I write those down as essays or sometimes blog posts. In this case, eventually, young it became clear that it was meant to be a book. I love fulfilling my purpose and helping others do theirs.
